Desire – perfect world

Joint Exhibition

The longing for an ideal world moves people, especially in times of personal and social shocks and challenges. On September 15, 2023 at 7 p.m., the exhibition on the topic "Longing - ideal world" will open in the Kunstraum Backstube. As part of the vernissage, the artists introduce themselves to one another and take the audience into the creation of the individual works. Ulrike E Sticher will paint live and show part I of her performance "Desire - perfect world".

But what is the desire for a perfect world all about? Is the desire for a perfect world a phantom; just an idea that gives hope, combined with the desire to be able to experience it now and today? Is this desire something that drives people internally to search in order to find and is it perhaps a deep, never-satisfied need of people in the hunt for harmony and peace? What does a perfect world mean? What does it look like and where can we find it? Can we create one or will it remain just a sweet dream?

The artist collective Polyptychon with Anne Dubber, Monika Geyer, Cordula Hilgert, Outi Nietosvaara, Ulrike E Sticher and Damyeong Yoo have approached this topic in very different ways. They don't take up these big words about "desire" and the "perfect world" in a flat and pathetic way. No, sometimes, like the installation "TransFORMation - The Emperor's Old Clothes" by Monika Geyer from Roßdorf, you need a second look or the intellectual exchange with the artist in order to understand. Her installation consists of a dialogue between a two-dimensional collage on canvas and a 3D collage that wraps a tailor's dummy in a multi-layered garment made of old papers. Anne Dubber from Krefeld is showing works in a square and is searching for Eden in her very typically lyrical, abstract painting style. Damyeong Yoo's oil paintings lead into a mystical world of being and non-being. In an assemblage of the world and an installation of oversized dominoes, Cordula Hilgert draws the viewer's attention to the effective and necessary power of the individual. Outi Nietosvaara are inspired by lyrics by Leonard Cohen and their own experiences. In her pictures she moves the tension and the conflict that arise from homesickness and pain combined with the hope for the moment when everything is as it should be again. The abstract-expressive works by Ulrike E Sticher resemble a play in four acts; four paintings in four dominant colors tell stories from life that the viewer is invited to tell them themselves. The exhibition leads through two rooms and shows works from the fields of assemblage, installation, painting, poetry and video. The video clips take the viewer on a personal walk by the artists along the flow of thoughts on the subject. It will be interesting to see whether the exhibition will provide answers or new questions. The exhibition is definitely something to talk about.

The exhibition is from September 15th. until October 22nd, 2023, it can be seen on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. or by personal appointment in the Kunstraum Backstube.

On September 16 and 17, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the gallery will be open during the open studio days of the Kultursommer Südhessen. On Saturday, September 16th at 3 p.m. there will be a talk with the artists over cake and champagne and a hands-on activity for the visitors. On Sunday, September 17th At 3 p.m., visitors can follow the Life Performance II "Desire - perfect world" with the ensemble "Pinselklänge" with Stefan Mann on the electric piano and Ulrike E Sticher on the brush. Damyeong Yoo engages everyone in a lyric performance of lyrics, song and music. On both days you can look over the shoulders of all the artists present as they create new works of art.

The artists are also looking forward to many visitors at the finissage on October 22nd. at 16 o'clock. All artists are present and lead through the exhibition again. The live performance "Desire - perfect world", part III with Ulrike E Sticher ends this afternoon. Lukas Grossmann, pianist and composer, will play a sonata by Franz Schubert and his own composition on the work "Schweif" by Damyeong Yoo on the electric piano.
